Rangali Island launches ‘The Green Team’

Tuesday, 1 July 2008 14:01

Forget the ‘A team', the new ‘Green Team' at the Conrad Maldives Rangali Island has been equipped with the power to save more than the good guys!

The award-winning Indian Ocean resort has implemented a new ‘we care' course to ensure all team members are equipped with the environmental awareness to safeguard the future of the Maldives.

maldivesarialgrooveA training course teaches staff the facts, figures and possible impact of Global Warming on their surroundings as well updating them on the reasoning behind the existing environmental measures implemented by the resort. On completion of the course, staff members become part of the Green Team, working together to suggest and initiate further positive changes in the resort.

Carsten Schieck, General Manager commented, "The initiative forms part of the Conrad Maldives Rangali Island's ongoing commitment to protecting the fragile setting of the resort for future generations. With a largely Maldivian staff, it is our duty to work together to best safeguard one of the last paradises on earth."

Since its inception, the Green Team has introduced measures including the sale of used ink cartridges to a Refill company on behalf of a nominated charity and the ‘Earth Hour', a monthly exercise that invites all guests and staff to turn off all lights and appliances within the entire resort. The team will also soon unveil a green website, which outlines the resort's commitment to eco-initiatives.

The resort separates and recycles all waste where possible; uses biodegradable cleaning products across all departments; generates all hot water from solar power and runs a wastewater and desalination plant to produce water for the irrigation of the island.

To cut down on food miles, the Conrad Maldives Rangali Island grows the majority of its organic fruits and vegetables on nearby Mandhoo Island, also home to a local Maldivian community whose school is sponsored by the resort. The resort's Dive team also participate in regular beach and under-water clean up missions and are currently sponsoring an important Whale Shark Study, which aims to learn more about the vulnerable species in order to protect and enhance understanding of their conservation.
