Maldives based J Hotels & Resorts is looking at tapping the growing Bollywood tourism segment. The Group, which already operates two beach resorts in Maldives is slated to launch three more properties on January 10, 2009. Talking about the potential of Bollywood promoting tourism in Maldives, B A Rahim, Director – Sales & Marketing, J Hotels & Resorts Pvt. Ltd. said, “It was Bollywood, which made the unknown corners of the world popular in India as tourism destinations. Since Maldives is one of the short haul destinations for Indians, we are not leaving any stone unturned to promote our properties primarily in Indian market and globally. Few shoots have already taken place at the Group’s Handufushi Resort, which had a soft launch in May this year with a few more shoots lined up at the new properties in the coming months.

Young artist travels for his artwork
20:05
|0 commentsWALKERS along the banks of the River Dulnain and in the surrounding hills may have stumbled across a local artist putting the finishing touches to his latest painting for an exhibition of his work at one of the country's leading galleries next month.
Since graduating from Gray's School of Art in Aberdeen last year, Nick Law from Carrbridge, has been funded to travel as far as South-east Asia and the Indian Ocean to develop his art.
A series of paintings completed in the Maldives will form the basis of the 24-year-old's solo exhibition at the Leith Gallery in Edinburgh, his biggest yet. These will be complemented by several painted of more familiar landscapes around his family home in Carrbridge.
While in the Maldives, Mr Law became the first artist in residence at the national gallery of the group of islands in the Indian Ocean and taught fine art to the local community.
Before this he exhibited in Edinburgh and was one of the artists picked to star in The Gaelic Connection, an exhibition of artists from the Highlands and Islands at the Rendezvous Gallery in Aberdeen.
Last year, he also won a scholarship from the Royal Scottish Academy to spend three months painting in Florence, Tuscany and Sicily before this experience attracted the attention of the National Gallery of the Maldives.
"In the past there has been a lot of painting there for the tourist trade," Mr Law said. "There were also a lot of foreign painters who went there to try to find a separation from their current lifestyle and subjects.
"I was asked to teach fine art while I was there. Travel has always been quite a big part of my work process."
However, the former Grantown Grammar pupil's international lifestyle has not reduced his love of the landscape of home.
Over the past few weeks he has packed his easel, brushes and paints into a backpack to paint "en plein air" – outdoors to you and me – around Carrbridge and the River Dulnain.
"I am just finishing off some of the work from the Maldives at the moment before I deliver them to the gallery on Sunday," he said. "Now I am back in the country I am staying at my dad's house and painting around the Dulnain.
"I have managed to sell quite a few paintings but it is difficult to make a living painting over here. In a while I'm going to go back to Indonesia because life is cheaper over there."
One thing about home he will not forget, however, is the art teacher who inspired him to follow his dream of becoming an artist.
"I had a great last year at Grantown Grammar with my art teacher Campbell Bryson," he said. "He was very inspiring. A few in my year and the year above went on to study art at university."

The Maldives: now for children too
Sunday, 26 October 2008 07:41
|0 commentsOnce you couldn’t move for the honeymooners. Not now. The island has been transformed for kids.
In word-association tests, if you don’t answer “The Maldives” when the psychologist says honeymoon, the good doctor will give you a sideways stare.
These so-romantic Indian Ocean atolls are now as indelibly imprinted on the gilt-edged marriage map as the best man’s cringeworthy double entendres and the embarrassing dad dancing at the evening disco. So the latest focus for its top resorts is rather puzzling – they’re pushing their kids’ clubs.
In the past, you practically had to walk around ringing a bell if you dared turn up with an infant, but the new hot hotel in the archipelago, Diva, is placing every bit as much emphasis on attracting brats as bridezillas.
To ensure a rose-tinted, Waltons-on-Sea appeal, it has drafted in Johnny Mathis, the exacting Swiss general manager who turned the Anassa in Cyprus into the poshest, family-friendly property in the Mediterranean.
Mathis explains: “The Maldives don’t require a string of vaccinations, and the shallow lagoons here mean that the beaches are incredibly safe for kids. Some islands are tiny, so mixing families and honeymooners might not work, but Diva has 4km of beach and we can easily accommodate both groups.”
The resort offers plenty to tempt the grown-ups, including six restaurants, six bars and a spa. Some areas are strictly adults only. But there is also a large children’s club, The Nest, which is complimentary and open daily from 9am to 10pm for 3-to 12-year-olds (under3s must be accompanied by a parent, or a baby-sitter for a nominal fee). It has a cinema lounge, a well-stocked library, a computer room, a large outdoor playground and a “siesta lounge” for when your toddler tires of excess and needs an afternoon nap.
Next door, just for teens, is the Place, stacked with WiFi computers, PlayStations, table tennis and pool tables. Beach-volleyball matches are organised here, and tennis tournaments are held on its two dedicated courts. There is also Musik, a nightclub with live bands – though since this also doubles as a conference space, it’s never going to rival Mahiki for ambience.
Diva isn’t alone in targeting those with children. When Reethi Rah opened three years ago, Jodie Kidd and Aidan Butler and Tom Cruise and Katie Holmes were among the stream of high-profile honeymooners seeking out its six-star seclusion. But what really surprised the resort’s bosses was the demand from families. During the Easter and Christmas breaks, 80% of its guests are nowen famille.
Reethi Rah already has an impressive complimentary kids’ club, complete with dinky swimming pool and pint-sized sun loungers; and ClubOne for teen-agers, staffed by its own sports and entertainment team. Now, it is looking to boost its family appeal further by introducing a “parents go lightly” scheme.
This would allow guests to preorder everything from nappies to buggies for their villa, rather than run the risk of having their baby milk mistaken for sarin at the airport.
The Beach House at Manafaru, which opened in February, is another newcomer with its eye on looking after junior. Apart from complimentary kids’ and teen clubs, it has a giant trampoline, tennis, volleyball and badminton courts, Ninten-do Wii, an 18-hole golf simulator – and a special spa menu. For the “Lil’ Mud-Man” treatment, youngsters are given a bowl of chocolate mud to smear over themselves, before jumping into a mud bath and having a mini massage... followed by a slice of chocolate cake.
The idea is catching on, too. In May, the Conrad Rangali followed gooey suit with its Ice Cream Spa, where kids can have a “Super Sundae Supremo” body scrub and massage using “Gotta Have It Pomegranate”. And if the thought of those ingredients doesn’t make you feel queasy, the prices will – the Supremo costs about £45.
Which brings us to the question of cost. Why whisk your family to one of the world’s most expensive destinations when the kids could just as easily chew sand on Bournemouth beach?
Adrian Burley, sales manager of Constance Hotels, reckons he has the answer. Constance owns child-friendly luxury hotels such as the Lemuria in the Seychelles and Le Prince Maurice in Mauritius, and it will open Halaveli in the Maldives next March.
“Le Prince Maurice was envisaged as a sophisticated boutique hotel for couples,” Burley says, “but we found that lots of families came and loved it too, so we added a kids’ club. There are lots of parents who aren’t willing to compromise on standards and go to some awful holiday village just because they’ve had children.”
Child-friendly touches at Halaveli will include mini slippers and bathrobes, and welcome trays with mock champagne in an ice bucket.
So that’s the kids sorted... all we need to worry about now is how mummy and daddy are going to pay for it all.
Travel brief All prices below are for a week for a family of four, including flights and transfers
Susan d’Arcy travelled as a guest of Seasons in Style (01244 202000, www.seasonsinstyle.com), which offers Diva from £8,910, half-board; and Reethi Rah from £9,170, half-board.

Sovereign Holidays (0871 664 0227, www.sovereign.com) has Halaveli from £7,710, B&B
KIDS’ CLUBS ON A BUDGET
If you can’t afford the five-star kids’ clubs, here are four more wallet- and family-friendly Maldivian islands. Little Johnny might have to manage without the massage, though. Prices are for a family of four, for a week, including flights and transfers.

Handu Fushi Resortis situated close to a local village, so visitors can get a glimpse of Maldivian life. Although there is no kids’ club, there is a children’s swimming pool. From £4,496, half-board, through Hayes & Jarvis (0871 664 0246, www.hayesandjarvis. com).

|0 commentsMany of the Airports Reps engaged in taking care of tourists arriving and departing Male’ International Airport are to support the Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP) led opposition Alliance, according to long serving Reps.
At a press briefing held at Villa TV (VTV), two founder members of the Airport Reps Association and Board member of the Association along with MDP Interim President Ibrahim Hussain Zaki said that majority of the 300 or so Reps working at the airport have endorsed MDP Alliance. They said the Reps decision to support the opposition Alliance was motivated by the fact the government authorities have given them a deaf year to solve their problems. He said they have several meetings with concerned authorities requesting better facilities to serve the guests but to no avail. As such the Reps support to the opposition Alliance is a support for change.
Founder member of the Airport Reps Association Mohamed Nazim said Airports Reps closely monitor the developments of the country. He said he is keen express lack of development in their area of work and work done by the association to improve the facilities.
“We have on several occasions expressed our difficulties, even on individual basis, to concerned authorities” said Nazim stating that even though yesterday he was not representing the Airport Reps Association he was representing a large number of people supporting MDP led opposition led Alliance.
Nazim said tourists after exiting the arrival terminal have no proper place to either sit down or rest or even to shelter from rains during rainy season. He said there were many other difficulties they face and that despite repeated meetings with Airport Authorities or Tourism Ministry no action has been taken.
Founder member of Airports Reps Association Fathulla Faiz expressed that even the most basic services are not available to the guests. He said despite the difficulties they have always strived to provide quality service to the guests.
Mohamed Rasheed who has been working at the airport for over 28 years said considering the development of the Maldives tourism industry the services available to the tourists at Male’ International Airport has not improved at all.
He said while a number of additional islands are being opened up tourism, the services at the airport should also be improved. He said so far all their pleas have fell on deaf years.
He further noted that out of the three X ray machines at the departure terminal usually only will be in a serviceable condition forcing the passengers to stay in queues for long periods of time. He also said lack of ferry terminal at Male’ is also causing major difficulties.

Alila Hotels and Resorts to Become Carbon Neutral
07:47
|0 commentsAlila Hotels and Resorts is pleased to announce its commitment to go carbon neutral, first through its head office and then throughout all of its properties in Asia. Working with The GreenAsia Group, a specialist in carbon management in Asia, Alila will first achieve carbon neutrality for its head office in Singapore by December 2008.
The entire process involves the measurement, reduction and offsetting of greenhouse gases emissions resulting from not only the business activities of Alila’s head office, but also from both the professional and personal engagements of its management team. A carbon footprint assessment is presently being conducted. With guidance from The GreenAsia Group, Alila is methodically measuring its total greenhouse gases emissions in Singapore and will implement energy efficiency practices accordingly to reduce and avoid carbon emissions to the greatest extent possible. The remaining unavoidable emissions will be offset by purchasing carbon credit certificates from green projects based in Asia.
Further affirming its commitment, Alila intends to achieve carbon neutrality for all of its seven existing hotels and resorts in Asia and to create programs for its guests to enjoy carbon neutral holidays in the long run.
“Alila’s decision to go carbon neutral is in line with its long-held vision and corporate philosophy that commerce, conservation and the community can be integrated. Becoming carbon neutral complements Alila’s strong efforts towards respecting and preserving the environment. We are continuously striving to make our approach more comprehensive,” said Frederic Simon, Managing Director and COO of Alila Hotels and Resorts. “In particular, carbon neutrality for our head office means taking a further step to ensure that our management team, including myself, is environmentally friendly and commits to reducing our personal greenhouse gases emissions. We hope to eventually operate at the best standards of environmental and sustainable development in combination with good business economics.”
The GreenAsia Group, established in 2007, is one of the first in Asia to offer carbon reduction and carbon offsets solutions, which meet highest international standards, to business corporations choosing to reduce their impact on climate change through voluntary action.
“Carbon emissions, which contribute to climate change, is one of the world’s key environmental concerns. The GreenAsia Group is committed to conserving the environment, especially in Asia, through sharing our knowledge in this field. We are very happy to work with Alila Hotels and Resorts who is passionate and strongly committed to the environment,” said Bradley Gardner, founder of The GreenAsia Group and a resident of Asia since 1974.
Alila Hotels and Resorts currently manages seven hotels and resorts in Bali, Jakarta, Laos, Thailand and the Philippines. Known as a niche innovator of exclusive hotels and resorts, many of its properties are also well-known for their contributions to environmentally sustainable tourism. Alila Villas Hadahaa in the Maldives, which is slated to open in 2009, achieved the prestigious Green Globe ‘Building, Planning and Design’ Certified Status in August 2008. Both Alila Ubud and Alila Manggis in Bali achieved the Green Globe ‘Operational’ Certified Status in May 2007 and were conferred the inaugural Wild Asia Responsible Tourism Awards in November 2006 for their efforts and support towards responsible tourism in Asia.

The process begins with carbon footprint assessment conducted in conjunction with internationally-respected technical and specialist partners such as Edinburgh Centre of Carbon Management (ECCM). The assessment identifies the actions required to reduce carbon emissions and achieve greater energy efficiency. Remaining emissions are offset through verifiable energy reduction certificates linked to projects that improve the quality of life for the less privileged communities in Asia. LIGNE ST BARTH brings Caribbean flair to the Maldives

|0 commentsThe newly-opened Irufushi Beach & Spa Resort in the Noonu Atoll offers deluxe wellness and, starting November 2008, the Maldives Island resort will also offer Caribbean flair, thanks to LIGNE ST BARTH
Palm trees adorn the white beaches, swaying to the rhythmic sounds of the Indian Ocean. In a fairytale-like location, in the middle of the Noonu Atoll, it suddenly appears: the newly-opened Irufushi Beach & Spa Resort - an oasis, far from civilisation and the daily grind. A better place than this to plunge into the world of total relaxation has yet to be discovered!
Only 91 nautical miles from Malé International Airport is an endless stretch of unspoilt nature: even the very first impressions of this dreamy island stir feelings of repose and calmness. Tradition combined with luxury, pure relaxation and an unusual holiday concept is what the Irufushi Beach & Spa Resort is all about: an ideal place to pull back and perfectly suited to those freshly fallen in love, newlyweds, families and stressed business-people.
The spa’s unique “Sleep Concept”, for example, has been conceived to help adults and children relax, fall asleep and slumber restfully. With exceptional treatments, teas, breathing techniques, special pillows and music, stressed adults and children are enticed to participate in the program “Sweet Dreams” as a way to find deep and relaxing sleep.
The jewel and pride of the resort is, without a doubt, the spa area. On an area of ca. 1,200 square metres that is surrounded by luxuriant vegetation, guests can indulge in their personal inner kingdom. The spa’s philosophy is based on the Sun as a central element: the wellness regimen is intended to unfold its warming, youth-enhancing effects, encouraged through relaxing treatments that harmonize body, spirit and soul.
A total of 20 pavilions have been designed for the respective forms of treatment, which are based on traditional and holistic methods: the teachings of the Five Elements, traditional Ayurveda, and yoga and meditation.
Additional offerings, like a beauty and hair salon, sauna, steam bath and jacuzzi, tempt guests to fully enjoy their rest and relaxation. And pure wellness is transformed into an even more wonderful experience when the exclusive Caribbean treatments and products by Ligne St Barth come into play, allowing guests to indulge in a sensual Caribbean atmosphere, filled with exotic fragrances.
Why the luxurious elixirs from LIGNE ST BARTH are so special:
They all contain top-quality active substances extracted from exotic plants, blossoms and fruits, which are individually combined with fresh ingredients to meet the respective needs of every skin type. Ligne St Barth cold-presses all of their plant-based oils, using a very mild process.
The exclusive LIGNE ST BARTH spa treatments gently support natural skin regeneration, nurture intensively and provide yet another bit of tender loving care for the soul. Fresh ingredients, like, for example, fresh and exotic papaya-, pineapple- and cucumber-puree are mixed together with the exquisite LIGNE ST BARTH elixirs with great care while the guest watches.
The guest is also given the opportunity to select his or her favourite fragrance! The fresh ingredients and fragrances plus the pure, premium oils have a very pleasant and nurturing effect on the body, spirit and soul.
The SunSpa at Irufushi Beach & Spa Resort is the first of the three Sun Spas in the Maldives that will offer the Caribbean LIGNE ST BARTH treatments as of November 2008. A gradual expansion of the cooperative venture to include all three resorts is already being planned.

Vakarufalhi resort was sold with a huge loss to STO
22:30
|0 commentsAuditor General Ibrahim Naeem has revealed STO Board was against selling STO’s resort Vakarufalhi but in spite of that STO has sold the resort at a very low price. Auditor General has revealed this in the 2007 Audit Report of STO in which he has mentioned about several irregularities of the company. Naeem pointed out the resort was sold under an obligation because major investment of the resort was by Athama Investment with only a name sake investment on the part of STO. This has resulted in a situation where STO ran the risk of losing the resort compelling the company to sell the resort.
Naeem however said Vakarufalhi Resort was sold at a price of US $ 7,441,039 and this price was fixed on the basis of the rentals Athama Travels has to pay to STO from 2007 to 2017 which was discounted up to 2007 amounting to US$ 3,647,848. Auditor General said this price is not the market price of a resort of this kind which could be sold at a much higher price in the open market. The resort will get an additional 10 years of lease if a sum of US$ 10 million is invested on the resort and it is one reason why the resort can fetch a much higher price. Auditor General was of the view Vakarufalhi was a resort with a major share of the government, and the resort have been sold with huge loss to the company and someone has to take responsibility for recovering this loss to the company.
The report also brought to light STO has given loan facilities to three investors in the tourism sector amounting to sums of Mrf 112,732,250, Mrf 11,333,347 and Mrf 10,178,248 which the report said is against the relevant procedures. The report also referred to the sale of tea estate in Sri Lanka, import of medicines and consumables and procurement of staple food and other items. STO has issued a statement in response to the report with particular reference to the loan facilities which the company said was provided under an agreement to obtain the necessary foreign currency for the imports of the company.

The Maldives changed to a republic twice, first in 1952 when Mohamed Amin was elected as the first president of the country. However the republic lasted only few months and the republic was abolished. The country again decided to change to a republic from a monarchy in 1968 when Ibrahim Nasir was elected President. President Nasir stepped down in 1978 after serving two terms.Nasir was succeeded by President Gayoom who was first elected to the post in 1978. President Gayoom is completing his sixth term on 10 November 2008.
For the first time in the modern history of the country, powers of the state have been separated. The Constitution has also introduced multi party presidential elections in which the president will be elected by a direct vote of the people. The candidate securing over 50% of votes will be elected as president and there will be a run-off election if none of the candidates gets an absolute majority in the first round.
There has been extensive campaigning by all candidates during the past month in a manner never seen in the Maldives before. It is expected to have a very high turn out in the election.
Tourism workers gain employment rights
Wednesday, 8 October 2008 14:12
|0 commentsA bill approved by the People’s Majlis today which will guarantee several rights claimed by employees working in the tourism sector will halt a mass strike planned for tomorrow. The bill was passed today in the first meeting of the third session of the People’s Majlis after adding 5 more amendments proposed during the meeting today. The amendments have restricted maximum 48 hours work per week for these employees, payment of over time for work exceeding 48 hours, 1/3 extra payment for the Holy month of Ramazan, Reducing probation period from 6 months to 3 months and include employees working in tourist vessels for entitlement of these benefits.
Five amendments out of 9 amendments proposed in the meeting were approved. Out of these five amendments, one was proposed by Male’ member and SLP presidential candidate Ibrahim Ismail, two by Addu member Ibrahim Shareef and two by Addu member Mohamed Aslam. Aslam and Ibra proposed four more proposals regarding the rights and benefits for employees working in tourism other industries and sectors but they were rejected by the Majlis.
The bill was submitted to the Majlis after studying and revising by the Committee of the Majlis, but Committee Chair Ibrahim Shareef said when he briefed members on how the bill was revised, said there was only one amendment in the bill when it was proposed by the government on 1 July 2008. He said during the process of the committee, there was extensive discussions with Maldives Association for Tourism Industry, MATI, Tourism Employees Association of Maldives, TEAM, Maldives Association for Construction Industry, MACI, Maldives National Defence Force, Ministry of Higher Education and Employment, and Ministry of Tourism. Shareef said the bill has addressed concerns of tourism and other industries and that has resulted in more amendments being included in the bill.
During the debate when members proposed additional amendments, they expressed concern on many important rights which have been left in the committee revision these members thus proposed more amendments. They said it is important to incorporate these amendments in the bill in order to address the benefits and rights employees are asking for. They said it is a matter of disappointment these important issues have not been accepted by the Majlis, and there is no solution to them unless people affected by these injustices get so frustrated and take to street protests and demonstration.
Today’s meeting was extended till 2 pm in order to complete the bill. The bill with the 5 additional amendments approved in the meeting was passed by a majority of votes out of 28 members present at the time of voting. 2 members voted against and one abstained.
The meeting was the first in the history of the Majlis to be broadcast live by 2 radio channels, DhiFM and AtollTV. The meeting was presided by Speaker Mohamed Shihab who also voted on two proposals deliberated today, one on the nomination of Saud Ibrahim for Anti Corruption Commission for which he cast a no vote and for Ibra’s amendment on 48 hour working week for employees for which he cast a yes vote.

Alila Hotels and Resorts sets new Eco-Luxe Standards in the Maldives
Tuesday, 7 October 2008 21:33
|0 comments"By joining the internationally-recognized Green Globe program and committing to having both its design and operations certified, Alila Villas Hadahaa is raising the benchmark for others to follow," said Andre Russ, Head of Global Markets for Green Globe.
Green Globe is the international benchmarking and certification programme for the travel and tourism industry based on the Agenda 21 principles for Sustainable Development endorsed by 182 Heads of State at the United Nations Rio Earth Summit in 1992. Green Globe is managed by EC3 Global, a subsidiary of the Australian based research body Sustainable Tourism Co-operative Research Centre, the world's largest source of tourism research.
Alila Villas Hadahaa is set on the pristine tropical island of Hadahaa in the Gaafu Alifu Atoll, surrounded by a vast expanse of sea, stunning coral reef, abundant fish life, and stands of the native Sea Trumpet and Sea Hearse. In developing the island, Alila kept to Green Globe's rigorous 'Building Planning and Design Standard' benchmarks and its own long-standing philosophy of luxury living in natural environments, while treading lightly to preserve the essence of a destination.
Reflecting Alila's vision of integrating commerce, conservation and community, the appointed architect, Yale-trained and Singapore-based Chan Soo Khian of SCDA Architects, creatively blended architecturally innovative designs in keeping to strict environmental standards. His design and construction blueprints were guided by Alila Villas Hadahaa's environmental impact studies.
Chan's sustainable design goals were to protect the environment and be as energy efficient as possible. To achieve these objectives, Chan orientated buildings to best deal with the tropical climate and natural environment of the island. Other innovations include rainwater harvesting, waste treatment plants, high roofed areas and open ceilings, cross ventilation in all indoor spaces, deep roof overhangs and windows shading. His concept of the resort, while contemporary in nature, makes use of many natural materials, including coconut, timber and coral stones found in the region.
Notably, the resort site will have a very low building and infrastructure coverage area. Only approximately 20% of the property will be built-up. Large areas of the site are designated for biodiversity protection, where native species will be selected and reintroduced to help maintain the existing gene pool. This will result in biodiversity replenishment, something vital to the area.
The $40 million resort will feature 14 Aqua Villas and 36 Island Villas, 20 of which come with a private pool. In-resort facilities and services include the Leisure Concierge, a dive centre, a tropical island garden spa, a fully-equipped gym, a Maldivian specialty fine dining restaurant, a rooftop lounge, the Alila Living boutique and a library with a star-gazing roof. All resort villas and facilities, strongly accented with Maldivian culture, are designed to integrate into the site as carefully as possible to preserve the natural beauty of the destination.
Sustainably planned and designed from the ground up, great care is now being taken in every detail of the construction of the resort to preserve the unique Maldivian experience and to ensure that environmental footprints are kept to a minimum. A local civil, building and labor contractor who is undertaking the major construction works will source construction materials locally wherever possible. Specifically, all building works of the jetty and Aqua Villas will only be carried out only during extreme low tides to minimize silt disturbance. There will be minimal site clearance as well, and to date, several villas were re-positioned during construction to preserve existing trees.
"I applaud Alila Villas Hadahaa for their commitment to a long term sustainable future with Green Globe and we take this opportunity to congratulate all those involved for their dedication and hard work," said Stewart Moore, Chief Executive Officer of EC3 Global.
By this commitment, Alila Villas Hadahaa is taking a leading role in helping to address the issues surrounding climate change and sustainability. It takes on a social responsibility beyond the design and construction stages to progressive operations. It will continuously monitor and assess the resort's operational efficiency, ultimately achieving the Green Globe Company Standard. Alila intends to bring the Maldivian destination experience to an unparalleled level.
Alila Villas Hadahaa represents Alila's next generation of luxury villa resorts that blend the ultimate in luxury with innovative lifestyle. Designed in harmony with its environment, Alila Villas are selectively developed to grace some of the most spectacular destinations in the world. Alila Hotels and Resorts is currently developing Alila Villas in Bali, India, Vietnam, Indochina, Oman and the Gulf regions.
Alila Hotels and Resorts currently manages seven hotels and resorts in Bali, Jakarta, Laos, Thailand and the Philippines. Many of these properties, including Alila Ubud and Alila Manggis, are well-known for their contributions to environmentally sustainable tourism. Both Alila Ubud and Alila Manggis achieved the Green Globe Certified Status in May 2007 and were conferred the inaugural Wild Asia Responsible Tourism Awards in November 2006 for their efforts and support towards responsible tourism in Asia.
The Soneva Fushi philosophy by Nicholas Rainer

The tourism industry here is environmentally-retarded. Green generally only matters when it’s the hue. There are some small improvements though. Increasingly, inbound tour operators seem to be awakening to the necessity of preserving the environment, if only to protect their livelihoods. Yet unless hotels start reducing their energy and water consumption, improving their waste management systems and generally gearing themselves towards more sustainable practices, their newfound eco-consciousness could come to naught. As for the government, it’d be nice to know where the funds collected by environment taxes go. The odds that they’re actually spent on the environment are rather slim.
For inspiration, Mauritian hotels could do far worse than look northwards, to the Maldives to be precise, where Soneva Fushi, a stunning luxury resort has dispelled the myth that high-end tourism and environmentally-friendly practices don’t mix. Its swimming pools are filled with salt water. It has committed itself to becoming carbon neutral in the next few years by using renewable energies and reducing its use of electricity by privileging natural ventilation instead of air conditioners. Rain water is collected and endemic plants are used extensively. Most importantly, its clients love the experience!
More glaring than the environmental insensitivity of some is the attempt by others to slap an eco-tourism label to their activities. Despite often being marketed as a green activity, quad biking, for example, violates every single principle of eco-tourism. One of the world’s leading environmental NGOs, Conservation International, points out that ecotourism consists of a lot more than simply organizing outdoor activities. “It's about ensuring that visitors travel responsibly, help protect the wildlife they are visiting and contribute to the well-being of local communities. Ecotourism only works when it yields economic benefits to local people, supports conservation and reduces the human impact of travel. It requires the active and educated participation of tourists and the travel industry alike, and it involves everyone from the visitor to the tour operator and airline, the hotelier and the local labour force to agriculturists and individual conservationists.
Contrarily to what the authorities seem to believe, the sustainable island concept and the aim of welcoming two million tourists are mutually exclusive. Not only will the latter place an almost untenable amount of strain on our overstretched water and energy resources, but it will further imperil our already fragile vital coastal zones. Liberalization has a steep price. Have we asked ourselves if we’re prepared to pay it?

TEAM’s decision to reconsider strike due DRP - Shareef
22:40
Filed Under: Strike |0 commentsTourism Employment Association of Maldives decision to reconsider the strike planned for October 5 is due to the hard work of Dhivehi Rahyithunge Party (DRP), DRP parliamentary group member MP Ibrahim Shareef has said.
He made the statement at a media breifing held at Maumoon 2008 campaign media office yesterday. Shareef who is also the chairperson of the Majlis ad hoc committee on reviewing the Employment Act said that it was the opposition who had convinced the resort employees and tourism related employees that the Employment Act does not fully protect them and that it was done mainly for political purposes.
Shareef said opposition parties have encouraged tourism workers to strike and that such encouragement has adversely affected the industry. He also said the opposition has brought the planned strike to the attention of world media.
Shareef said in order to solve the problem amicably discussions were held with Majlis committee on National Development and Maldives Association for Tourism Industry (MATI) and other stake holders of the tourism industry. He said following the discussions TEAM has been assured that matter will be sent to Majlis floor before October 6 and every right enjoyed by other workers will be facilitated to the tourism workers.
Shareef further said following DRP assurances, TEAM has decided to trust the party completely and has agreed not to hold the strike. He said DRP was working to facilitate better wages by working reasonable hours. He said the amendment to the Employment Act will be endorsed by DRP and passed by the Majlis as proposed by the Majlis committee.
This is not a political issue but a problem of national interests and that it is not the intention of DRP to deprive the rights of any group. He said the matter will be solved as expeditiously as possible.
