Huvafen Fushi Coral Regeneration Program Called 'Stingray Reef'

Wednesday, 29 July 2009 16:50

At a time of increasing concern over the environment, Per AQUUM’s Huvafen Fushi, is taking steps to support the recovery of the Maldives' shallow reefs by appointing a resident marine biologist, Ulrike Kloiber.

Kloiber’s roll is to develop and manage the resorts’ own coral nursery and house reef rehabilitation project. ‘Huvafen Fushi’s island name, Nakatcha Fushi is especially significant as it is subject to one of the world’s first coral ‘cultivation’ programmes: a process described as ‘underwater gardening’ where Ulrike introduces ‘nubbins’ of nursery-grown coral to aid the survival of the reef.

As part of the coral initiative the house reef was recently named at a competition organised by The Hay Festival in London, for the UK’s younger generation to name a coral reef system in the Maldives. The winning name ‘Stingray Reef’ or ‘Madi Faru’ in the local Dhivehi language was thought of by 10-year-old London girl, Zsuza Maygar who was awarded by the President of the Maldives.

The cultivation programme – by which pieces of detached coral are cultivated in the nurseries before being transplanted to the reef – has been under way since 2007 and has so far resulted in over 1000 new ‘nubbins’ of coral taking root in the wild. The reefs have been described as ‘rainforests of the sea’ due to their high diversity of coral species.

“The results have been steady and encouraging. The reef around the underwater spa has developed and marine life has increased tremendously,’ says Ulrike.

Guests staying at the resort can also get involved by adopting their own coral for transplantation to the reef. Every guests’ coral will have its picture taken and tagged and regular updates are sent about their growth progress.

In addition, Huvafen Fushi has developed various activities for guests and research professionals to gain a better understanding about this beautiful and fragile environment. These include Night Snorkeling and SpaQuarium which is similar but keeps you dry!

A Touch Tank where Ulrike houses a cushion starfish, sea cucumbers and hermit crabs was created to generate awareness and educate guests prior to snorkeling, diving or even for those who do not go into the water.

The Coral regeneration programme is supported by Ulrika’s own “Blue Team” and InterMarine Consulting's Dr Robert Hilliard formerly the Principal Marine Environmental Scientist at leading US-based engineering design firm, URS and Steven Lindsay, independent marine consultant and marine environmental scientist. The project was recently visited by Dr Charles Anderson, a professional marine biologist who has lived and worked in the Maldives since 1983.

Maldives still holds world dive record

Friday, 24 July 2009 20:26

They came, they saw, they didn’t quite break the record.

About 13 Lorain County residents were part of a massive effort Saturday at Gilboa Quarry near Findlay to break the Guinness world record for most divers submerged at one time. Only 794 people participated, short of the 958 people who submerged themselves for 20 minutes underwater in 2006 off the cost of the Maldives islands in the Indian Ocean.

The event drew people from all over the country and Canada, and even though the record wasn’t broken this time, plans to bring the record to the United States and Ohio are in the works for next year.

“We’re bound and determined to break this,” said Jim Blauvelt, of Elyria, who was one of about 100 people who already signed up to dive next year at the quarry. “Even though we didn’t this year, we tried, and it will fall.”

Blauvelt said about 150 people registered for the dive but did not show up Saturday, which would have put them within striking distance of the record. The number of people this year was better than the previous record of 722 people, also set off the Maldives, in 2005.

“They have a definitive advantage,” Blauvelt said. “Most people like warmer water to dive in, but we already had more than they had (in 2005). so we have a very good chance of breaking it next year.”

A recreational diver for the past three years, Blauvelt, 39, said the event was a blast despite not getting enough people. It included a DJ, barbeque pulled pork, homemade ice cream, chain saw wood carvings and a social event to rival any other.

“Everyone was so personal,” said Wendy Vayda, another Elyria resident, who has been diving since 2004. “It was so much fun.”

Lanes were set up in the 14-acre quarry using nylon rope and down lines were there for divers to hold onto while they stayed underwater.

Blauvelt said the whole process only took about 90 minutes, from the time the divers went in the quarry, to the time they got out.

Maldives is a tropical paradise

19:50

The Maldives is a tropical paradise. Andy Richardson lay back and soaked up the sun.

Diana couldn’t eat her petite fours. She picked up the chocolate brownie triangle and popped it into her mouth.

There was an indulgent, breathless sigh, followed by a gentle, helpless groan. Then a cloud formed and she sighed again. “It’s no good,” she said. “I am totally full.”

She beckoned a waiter and pointed to her plate of macaroons, chocolate ganaches adorned with gold and silver leaf, artful sugar work and harrummphhhed. “I’m so sorry,” she said. “But you’ll have to take these away.” Her shoulders slumped. She accepted defeat.

We’d been dining at the Cellar Restaurant at the Beach House Collection, on Manafaru, in the Maldives. It was the third successive dinner that we’d enjoyed and the menu was exceptional.

We’d started with a roasted duck margret served with a scallop capsicum relish and smoked salmon in horseradish. A chilled glass of Bird In Hand Chardonnay 2007, from Australia, had accompanied it.

The fish course was poached monkfish with vegetable ravioli and black truffle, alongside a South African Jordan Chameleon Rose 2007. A palate cleansing watermelon, raspberry and ginger granita had reinvigorated our appetites before the knock-out main course was served.

That featured wagyu beef sirloin with duck foie gras and a red wine sauce, with a glass of 2002 Italian Tenuta San Guido Guidalberto. For dessert, we’d feasted on a vanilla scented mousse in a cannoli tube with strawberry and peach compote alongside a 2007 Australian Kaesler Rizza Riesling.

Then it was the petite fours…. And Diana had to concede.
Similar culinary experiences had greeted us when we visited other restaurants and bars at The Beach House.

At Saffron, we’d enjoyed Asian fusion foods, like minced seafood satay on papaya salad followed by a Valrhona chocolate and wasabi fondue. At Four Seasons, we’d enjoyed wagyu beef steaks, lobster and gorgeously indulgent abalone.

At the infiniti pool, we’d watched in admiration as the sorbet butler delivered refreshing fruity ice to guests. And at the Amazon pool, we’d sampled knock-out cocktails and aperitifes.

The Beach House Collection is a world-leading resort in the Maldives that has won a string of accolades and awards since being opened two years ago.

It’s a tropical paradise with white sand beaches formed from crushed coral. Palm trees sway in the gentle breeze while the aquamarine waters are warm enough for year-round swimming.

Our group of six stayed in separate water villas, which were built out into the sea on giant wooden stilts. They personified comfort and luxury and were built in quintessential Maldivian style, with palm roofs and hard wood walls.

Each villa was equipped with high specification furnishings, state-of-the-art gadgets, glass observation panels fitted to the floor - allowing 24/7 views of the marine life, a vast lounge, giant bedroom, extraordinary bathroom, hot tub and jacuzzi and 146sq metres of space.

With year round temperatures above 25 degrees, and rain restricted to seasonal monsoons, there were plenty of time to relax. Secluded beaches proved perfect locations to while away afternoon strolls while brilliant, star-lit nights were also a highlight.

But, of course, with such extravagant food on offer, there was also plenty of time to enjoy sporty pursuits. Diving, water sports, land sports, excursions, fitness, a gentleman’s retreat, kids’ play area and boutique allowed us all to indulge our passions.

I took to the high seas, battling against the waves in a sea kayake during one downpour, then being pulled back to shore by Duncan, a fun-loving member of our party who proved his strength as a swimmer when he out-stroked my vessel.

We enjoyed day trips to fishing spots, where he hauled in red snapper and emperor fish, as well as snorkelling around one of the many Maldivian reefs that teemed with delicate, gaily coloured fish.

After our physical excursions, we repaired to the Shui Spa to enjoy yoga, beauty treatments, massage and similar delights from highly-skilled, multi-lingual therapists, who offered a wealth of experience and knowledge, along with their healing hands.

Tension and stress was expelled from our bodies as we relaxed in a cocoon on indulgent and exquisite pampering.

Prices for The Beach House Collection start at a ludicrously low £1,050 per person per week. That’s a small price to pay for a taste of Maldivian luxury. As our speedboat waited at the port to whisk us back to Sri Lanka for our flight to the UK, the resort manager asked whether any of us planned to return. Six of us responded, in unison: “Yes.”

Is Maldives going to lose Scuba Dive World Record?

22:33

When Jim Blauvelt goes for a dive Saturday, it might get a little crowded.

The Elyria man hopes to be underwater with an additional 1,000 people at the Gilboa Quarry near Findlay to break the Guinness world record for most divers submerged at one time.

Gilboa Quarry is sponsoring the attempt and is still registering certified divers to come out in the event to try to make history. The record is currently at 958 people who dove in 2006 in Maldives, a group of islands in the Indian Ocean. That record broke another that was set a year earlier with 722 people.

Blauvelt, a recreational diver for the past three years, said he goes to the Gilboa Quarry often, and the chance to be a part of breaking a world record was too good to pass up.

“It’s a challenge,” he said. “Plus, I want to bring the record back to the States. I don’t like sharing things with other countries.”

The 14-acre limestone quarry already has registered at least 700 people, Blauvelt said. The final tally is being kept secret until Saturday, when a drawing will be held for those who participate to guess the final number. Prizes for that and other contests include scuba equipment and a lifetime pass to the quarry.

Blauvelt, 39, said he knows of at least 16 other Lorain County residents who are making the trek to the dive site. The large body of water already contains a 65-foot-long, 78-foot-wide Grumman Gulf Stream Twin Turbo Prop Airplane, a helicopter and a school bus, so even a record number of divers will only take up a small portion of the water, he said.

“That fits in there and when you’re down there, it looks miniscule,” he said, referring to the 20,000-pound helicopter.
Wendy Vayda, another regular at the quarry, said quarry owner Mike Williams has been planning the record attempt for four years. She said he always errs on the side of safety, so she’s sure he’ll do everything to make sure it’s a safe, fun event.

“Every question I’ve asked him, he always has safety first,” the Elyria resident said. “I’m a big proponent of safety, so I know it will be fine.”

Vayda has been diving since 2004 and Blauvelt since 2006. Both said they love interacting with the water and discovering all they can see below the surface.

“You can see a lot more than what you can see on land,” Blauvelt said.

Both said they love Gilboa Quarry and were diving there as recently as Saturday. They learned about it and other diving quarries, like the Portage Quarry near Bowling Green and White Start Quarry in Gibsonburg, when they began training to dive.

As far as Saturday’s record-breaking attempt, those who want to participate must abide by several stipulations before getting into the water, including proving that they’ve been diving in the past 60 days. A fee of $50 is also required.

“For that $50 you get a T-shirt, free parking, they shuttle you and your gear for you from the parking lot, a free dinner — you get all that,” Vayda, 38, said. “It’s not just an admission fee.”

Vayda said Williams will try to get everyone into the water between 2 and 3 p.m. Saturday.

Emirates advances in West Asia including Maldives

21:05

Effective from the start of this month, Emirates airline will step up its presence in West Asia with additional services to Colombo, and Malé from its home base in Dubai. The expansion also signals the resumption of Emirates’ flights on the Malé -Colombo route.

In all Emirates will add four flights to Colombo and five to Malé, bringing its total frequency to 18 flights per week to Sri Lanka and 14 flights per week to the Maldives.

EK 654 will operate a circular route, Dubai- Malé -Colombo-Dubai, every Monday, Wednesday and Friday using a modern Airbus A330 aircraft in a three-class configuration of 12 First, 42 Business and 183 Economy Class seats.

Emirates will also introduce an additional direct connection between Dubai and Colombo every Friday on EK 650, and another two connections between Dubai and Malé on Wednesday and Friday with EK 658. These services will be operated with the technologically-advanced Boeing 777 series of aircraft offering 12 First, 42 Business and 310 Economy Class seats.

The additional services will offer passengers the convenience of morning, noon and evening departures.

Majid Al Mualla, Emirates Vice President, Commercial Operations, West Asia and Indian Ocean noted: “The introduction of over 1800 seats (per week per direction) on the two routes will be welcomed by business, leisure and student travellers. Business and student travellers from Sri Lanka can take advantage of the extra flights that seamlessly connect to onward points in North America and Europe via Dubai. At the same time the enhanced capacity offers convenient connections to Sri Lanka’s burgeoning expatriate population working in the Middle East and travelling home all year round.

“There are expectations that tourist traffic into Sri Lanka will improve during the winter season of 2009. In line with this expectation local authorities are already considering improvements in the tourism infrastructure. By introducing additional services and promoting these across our robust international network, Emirates is supporting the local government’s campaign to revive Sri Lanka’s tourism industry.”

Mr. Al Mualla added: “Our extra flights will grow the tourism potential of Maldives - a popular getaway for leisure travellers from Europe and the Middle East. Furthermore, the resumption of services between Malé and Colombo will encourage inbound tourists to opt for a two-destination holiday. It will also benefit Maldivians visiting Sri Lanka for medical treatment, cultural tourism, education and shopping.”

Meals by moonlight, diving with sharks and rolling on Beach Wheels in the mazy Maldives.

20:53

With the sun directly overhead, we headed out across the coral reef, our breath rasping through our snorkels. To our left was a purple sea anemone, to our right a powder-blue surgeonfish, and then we were out into the deeper, cooler water, where the reef dropped off sharply into the depths of the Indian Ocean. Within seconds we saw it: sleek, grey and fast, nosing towards us with that instinctive, preternatural cunning, flexing its body with restrained power. It was the reef's superior predator, king of the food chain - the shark.

My wife, Amanda, gripped my arm and we froze still in the water. We were several hundred yards from the shore and there was no one else within earshot. In that moment I thought: well this is just great.

Luckily, this was a reef shark, a harmless blacktip, and with so many thousands of bite-sized fish for him to feed on, we humans were of no interest. 'In all my 13 years here,' said Ronnie, our dive instructor, 'I have never known anyone to be attacked here.' Good. I'm glad we got that straight then.

It had taken precisely eight seconds from emerging from the flight that morning at Male airport in the Maldives before a discreet figure appeared at our side, all crisp white uniform and resort logos. 'Good morning, Mr Gardner, I am here to escort you and your family to the island.' My children looked up expectantly. The Maldives does pampering in spades - I could see they could get used to this.

The boat crew barely glanced at my wheelchair, a tedious but integral part of my life since getting shot while on assignment in Saudi Arabia five years ago.

Within seconds, they had me off the jetty and on to the cushioned deck and we were accelerating away in a flurry of foam.

When it comes to transfers, the Maldives has it sorted. Instead of messing around with buses or taxi queues, you go straight from the arrivals lounge to the adjacent harbour and take a speedboat to your island.

Strung out off the coast of Sri Lanka, the 1,200 islands straddle the Equator and most of them are uninhabited. Only 200 are lived on by Maldivians and 90 others are designated as tourist resort islands.

We were heading for Baros, a coral-fringed island in the North Male atoll, 30 minutes away by boat. Read more.....

Discover your dream island at Huvafen Fushi, Maldives

08:32

Is there anywhere else in the world other than the glorious Huvafen Fushi, in the Maldives, that offers underwater massages?

Actually Huvafen Fushi - which means 'dream island' is all about water.

Its management company, Per Aquum Resorts, Spas and Residences, has appointed a resident marine biologist, Ulrike Kloiber, to develop and manage the luxury resort’s own coral nursery and house reef rehabilitation project. Huvafen Fushi - island name Nakatcha Fushi - is especially significant in marine conservation as the its trendsetting coral ‘cultivation’ program is best described as ‘underwater gardening’. This involves pieces of detached coral known as ‘nubbins’ that are cultivated in nurseries before being transplanted to the reef, where the marine biology team continually monitors their growth. This cultivation program has been underway since 2007 and has so far resulted in over 1,000 new ‘nubbins’ of coral taking root in the wild.

As part of the publicity for its initiatives, to raise awareness of the importance of coral reefs, the threats posed to them by climate change, and the pioneering rehabilitation work that is helping to restore them. naming the coral reef system at Hvafen Fushi was put up as a competition at literary England's annual Hay Festival, May 21-31, 2009. Ten-year old Londoner, Zsuza Magyar won for her entered name, Stingray Ree’, which is Madi Faru in the local Dhivehi language. This was given the personal approval of President Nasheed of the Maldives.

With the success of its coral project, Huvafen Fushi has developed a host of new marine activities and experiences for guests to get more involved. There are coral planting sessions; night snorkeling; and the creation of an educational ‘touch tank’ containing cushion starfish, sea cucumbers, hermit crabs and other hidden treasures. Plans are also in place to create coral gardens beneath the glass floors of overwater villas and the two underwater treatment rooms at LIME spa.

Yes, Huvafen Fushi is indeed one of the signature resorts of Per Aquum (where Neil Palmer is new Chief Executive). The resort is part of Male atoll, 30 minutes by speedboat from Male International Airport, opened late 2003. Designed by architect Carl Ettensberger - whose current projects include the equally-amazing forthcoming Mandarin Oriental on Dellis Cay in Turks & Caicos - and Delphine Lyon, there are 43 villas, all with sizeable plunge pools. As well as its spa, designed by Richard Hywel Evans, memorable features include the luxury resort's T-shaped infinity pool, with thousands of fiber optic lights set into its base (you can dine in the pool's shallow end, for dinner between the stars, below and above, choosing a wine from one of the 6,000 bottles in the temperature-controlled cellar). The resort also has its own 70-ft Symphony cruiser, for special trips. Among the many celebrities who adore Huvafen Fushi is fashion designer Alexander McQueen.

Diving with Manta Rays in Maldives.......a must see video by BBC

Sunday, 5 July 2009 19:51

A must see video by BBC. Enjoy

Diving in the Maldives

19:32

Although the Maldives are known the world over for the stunning beaches and azure waters that typify the tropical idyll, its life beneath the water's surface is becoming ever more respected by divers in the know. The Maldives have some excellent coral reefs, but it's the abundance of fish life throughout the country that sets it apart from other dive destinations.

Most diving in the Maldives is drift dives from liveaboards where you allow the current to move you along. Due to the myriad channels and passages between the atolls, the current sweep and play throughout the island chain so that nutrients are always on the move. This accounts for the vast numbers of fish enjoying the passing feast and you can expect to see Napoleon wrasse, parrotfish, snappers, barracudas, jacks and sweetlips in every site where the water flows.

In the channels, you can explore the caves, caverns and overhangs where soft corals proliferate, and there is a riot of colourful sponges, invertebrates and gorgonian fans all profiting from the nutrient-rich water. There are also plenty of cleaning stations where cleaning wrasses and shrimps service the larger marine species.

Inside the atoll lagoons you often find pinnacles of rock vaulting up almost to the surface. These are known locally as 'Thilas' and are often bejewelled with sessile life forms. These formations bring water up from the ocean floor against their walls, feeding the sponges and soft corals that cling to its sides as well as creating an environment that supports a plethora of crustaceans and schools of resident fish.

Slightly removed from the reefs you are likely to spot the pelagics that frequent the Maldives, including manta rays and eagle rays and a variety of sharks including the mighty whale shark. Wherever you look there is likely to be something of interest going on and for many it is in the shallows where the best of the action takes place. Here the clear water, brightly illuminated by the sun's rays and playing host to great numbers of fish, provides an ideal environment both for photographers and divers alike.

Hotels.com Reveals The Increasing Popularity Of Minimoons

08:07

Hotels.com has conducted research that reveals 77% of newlyweds plan to go away for less than two weeks, opting for a 'minimoon' over a traditional two week honeymoon

Hotels.com research has revealed that minimoons - trips of less than two weeks - are increasingly replacing traditional fortnight-long honeymoons as cash-conscious newlyweds keep an eye on their budgets.

The Hotels.com poll of 'Wedding Ideas' magazine readers found that over three-quarters (77%) of couples are planning to take a honeymoon lasting less than two weeks. In fact, 30% are planning to go away for just one week or under. This group of 'minimooners' said budget constraints (74%) and worries about work commitments (56%) dictated the shorter length of their holiday.

It is not only the length of stay that is changing; the research found that couples are flexible about when they leave for their honeymoon. Whilst 57% of those questioned plan to head off straight after their wedding, over a quarter (28%) are considering waiting for a few weeks or months after the wedding before they go away and a further quarter (26%) said they would be happy to take a short break after the wedding and wait until they have the money for a longer holiday.

Honeymoon spend reflects this trend, with the majority of those surveyed (27%) saying they will spend between £500 and £1000 per person on their honeymoon, while one in five (19%) are planning to spend just £500 per person or under (£1000 in total). However, some couples will still splash out - 17% are planning to spend more than £2,000 per person on their perfect honeymoon.

The research found that while 54% of those questioned plan to go on a long haul post wedding trip, a growing number are planning to steer away from the traditional honeymoon beach destinations of Mauritius and the Maldives, and instead opt for holidays closer to home. While 18% are planning to go to mid-haul destinations such as Egypt, Turkey or Morocco, a further 19% will honeymoon in Europe and 9% are planning a UK break.

Beach and city breaks are the most popular honeymoon of choice, with a quarter of Brits (25%) choosing to combine culture and sunshine over a classic beach holiday (20%) or an exotic break (17%).

Alison Couper, Communications Director for Hotels.com, said: "A honeymoon is an important part of getting married and we're not surprised to see that people would rather downsize their trip than not go at all. Whether newlyweds decide to shorten their honeymoon to a 'minimoon' or stay the traditional fortnight but drop a hotel star rating, there are some fantastic deals to be had. There are savings of up to 50% off in the current Hotels.com summer sale, so honeymooners should take advantage."

Rachel Moschke, Editor of Wedding Ideas magazine, said: "Most of us worry about saving up for our wedding day, but it seems we're reluctant to give up the quality time together that a honeymoon offers. A 'minimoon' is the perfect way to start married life, without busting the budget."

Giant Rays' "Feeding Frenzy" Spots Protected in Maldives

Thursday, 2 July 2009 18:27

A manta ray channels plankton-rich water through its mouth near Hanifaru, one of the Indian Ocean islands that make up the Maldives, in an undated photo.

Hundreds of giant fish converge in Hanifaru Bay from May through November, when the lunar tide sucks krill and plankton to the surface, giving rays an all-you-can-eat buffet.

In June 2009 the Maldives created three new marine protected areas that include Hanifaru and other crucial feeding areas for mantas and whale sharks, the world's largest fish.
Fishing, boat speeds, and waste disposal will be regulated. The new sanctuaries, however, will allow some diving and snorkeling—a healthy tourist trade may provide alternative livelihoods for fishers, experts say.
"The government is committed to protecting and preserving the Maldives' exceptional biodiversity," Maldives Environment Minister Mohamed Aslam said in a statement.

"The marine environment is the bedrock of our economy, supporting our largest industries, tourism and fisheries."Roughly 40-foot-long (12.2-meter-long) long, plankton-hungry whale sharks also show up for the Hanifaru Bay feeding frenzy and stand to benefit from the June 2009 designation of three new marine refuges in the Maldives.

At least 120 of the shipping container-size sharks live in the ocean around the Maldives, one of the few places in the world where the gentle giants can be found year-round.
