India’s GMR Infrastructure has submitted a master plan on developing Male International Airport to the National Planning Council.

Department of National Planning said discussions over the master plan’s draft submitted by GMR Male International Airport Private Limited under the concession agreement between Ministry of Finance and Treasury, Maldives Airports Company Limited (MACL) and GMR-Malaysia Airports Holdings Berhad (MAHB) consortium were held at the council meeting on Wednesday.

The department, however, did not disclose details of the discussions.

The department stressed that GMR should submit a finalised master plan before April 2011.

“The council decided to consider the government’s proposal and to discuss the matter with government authorities. The council especially requested to cut down electricity usage,” the department said.

The department further noted that the council highlighted the importance of making the linked area between Hulhule and Hulhumale accessible to the public. A Panama company proposed a project to farm yellow-fin tuna in the Maldives, the department added.

According to the department, the council decided to determine whether the project could be carried out in the Maldives.
