Centara Hotels & Resorts has announced its expansion in the Republic of Maldives with the acquisition of Giraavaru Island Resort, which it will both own and manage.

This is Centara’s second property in the Maldives, following the opening of the Centara Grand Island Resort & Spa Maldives in December 2009.

Giraavaru is located in the South Male Atoll and is only 12 minutes by speedboat from Male International Airport.

The resort has a total of 140 villas, 30 of them land villas and 110 over-water villas.

Facilities include three food and beverage outlets, with an all-day restaurant, an Asian theme restaurant, and a poolside BBQ restaurant. There will be a SPA Cenvaree, swimming pool, fitness centre, activity centre and diving centre.

“We are very happy and very proud to be making this announcement,” says Suthikiati Chirathivat, Chairman of the Executive Board, Central Plaza Hotel Public Company Limited.

“Giraavaru represents a total investment of 44 million US dollars for us, which indicates our level of confidence in and commitment to the Maldives as a prime tourism destination.

We are closing the resort for upgrading and rebranding, and will be reopening as a quality four-star resort named Centara Resort and Spa, Male Atoll. The expected opening date is November this year.”

Chris Bailey, Senior Vice President for Sales & Marketing at Centara Hotels & Resorts says: “We are extremely excited by the opportunities this new resort in South Male Atoll provides. The growing market of Asian visitors requires a resort close to the airport, due to the arrival timing of most air services, and as an Asian brand this is a perfect fit.

Our popular premium four-star all-inclusive product delivering Centara quality and value is greatly appreciated by the international markets supporting the destination, and we are confident of success.”
