Maldives Tourist arrivals increase by 17.7 pct by September 2011

Tourist arrivals to the Maldives from January to September 2011  increased by 17 percent compared to the period of 2010.

Figures disclosed by the Tourism Ministry show that the number of tourists who visited the Maldives during the first nine months of the year increased to 669,172 from last year's 568,703, which is an increase of 82,469 tourists.

Statistics reveal that the tourist arrivals in September increased by 14.9 percent to 71,861 compared to September 2010.

China continued to dominate the Maldives tourism market in September with a 54 percent rise in the number of Chinese tourists who visited the Maldives compared to last year September.

However, the tourist arrivals from UK decreased by 10.3 percent to 8,896 while the number of tourists from Italy fell by 16.6 to 3,471.

Resorts and hotels operated 24,480 beds on average this year for tourists who stayed in the Maldives for an average period of 7.1 days. The average occupancy rate remained at 71.5 percent.
